Hennepin Healthcare Clinical Data
TYPES OF CLINICAL DATA
Research Data Warehouse (RDW)
The RDW gathers information from the Hennepin Healthcare System's (HHS) EPIC medical chart and billing data. The RDW is based on the OMOP common data model, developed by the Health Care Systems Research Network (HCSRN).
REDAC’s transition to utilizing the OMOP Common Data Model allows for cross-institutional collaboration through standardized data structures and terminology, making it easier to share methods and findings across organizations. This model also enhances the scalability of reports and analytics, allowing tools developed at REDAC to be reused or adapted in broader research networks
The RDW's 12 Domains
- Death
- Demographics
- Diagnosis
- Encounters
- Facility
- Lab Results
- Languages
- Med Orders
- Procedures
- Providers
- Social History
- Census Location (addresses)
- Vital Signs.
See the “RDW Master Data Dictionary” on the Hennepin RDW data dictionary for a description of each table, the variables contained in each table, variable formats, and variable code tables.
Epic (c) Clarity Database
The Clarity database contains a broad spectrum of clinical and administrative information, including detailed patient records such as diagnoses, treatments, and laboratory results, as well as operational data like staffing and bed utilization.
Epic (c) SlicerDicer
SlicerDicer is a self-service analytics tool integrated within Epic, designed to allow healthcare providers and researchers to explore and visualize patient data easily. This tool offers users the ability to perform near real-time, ad hoc queries on various data types, including patient demographics, clinical outcomes, and operational metrics. Users can customize their searches, slice data by multiple dimensions, and generate interactive reports and graphs directly within the Epic environment. SlicerDicer is especially beneficial for conducting preliminary analyses, identifying trends, and exploring data patterns without needing advanced technical skills.

Epic (c) Cosmos
Cosmos is a powerful data platform developed by Epic, designed to aggregate and anonymize patient data across various healthcare organizations participating in the network. This expansive database provides researchers with access to a vast array of de-identified clinical information from millions of patient records, facilitating large-scale studies on health trends and outcomes. By drawing on such a diverse and extensive dataset, researchers can conduct comparative effectiveness research, study rare conditions, and identify best practices across different healthcare settings.
ACCESSING CLINICAL DATA
REDAC data scientists now combine analytic services previously provided by ACE and the RDW. Submit a new REDAC request to access the following types of data and reporting tools.
