Research & Evaluation Data Analytics Core (REDAC)

WHAT IS REDAC?

REDAC is a dedicated, single-entry point resource providing centralized support with data analytics, program evaluation, and research methodology across the Hennepin Healthcare System (HHS) and the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI). Established to address longstanding challenges in aligning research needs with institutional data resources, the team is comprised of data scientists, clinical informaticists, Epic experts, research/evaluation methodologies, and project managers.

REDAC operates independently of the hospital’s IT infrastructure, allowing it to prioritize and manage research-focused data projects without being subject to clinical IT workflows or timelines. This unique structure enables REDAC to offer responsive, specialized support tailored to the unique demands of academic and data-driven inquiry.

Hennepin Healthcare Clinical Data & Clinical Analysis

Need data for a research project, quality improvement initiative, or to evaluate a new clinical program?

Our team has experience working with Epic’s Clarity and Caboodle databases in addition to our research data warehouse and routinely partners with clinical and operational experts to define computable phenotypes, validate extraction logic, and ensure data integrity. We employ a multi-step process that includes iterative query refinement, review of data completeness and accuracy, and structured quality assurance checks. REDAC has successfully supported numerous initiatives involving complex clinical domains and is committed to applying high standards to ensure reliable, analyzable data that aligns with project aims.

We can help you explore different data sources that exist within EPIC and external to EPIC, give guidance on what type of data set or data visualization might make sense, and when approval from the IRB will be needed. REDAC data scientists can help extract identified or de-identified data from a variety of clinical data sources and support data analysis and interpretation for your project.

Does your project include a new Epic build, workflows new service lines, new equipment, or software that will require integration into the EHR? Does your project aim to test a new tool in the EHR and need help with user-centered design, usability testing, and implementation? Work with clinical informaticists to get input on your proposed EHR solutions, and get your project visible to IS&T and on the IS&T roadmap for timely completion.

Data Collaboration/Sharing

REDAC can help facilitate the merging of data sources from your research partners outside of our Hennepin databases and have experience merging data from other health systems, Minnesota Department of Health, Hennepin County Public Health, and the Homelessness Management Information System (HMIS) among others. Data analysts are able to transform data to common data models such as OMOP and HCSRN to help facilitate external collaboration and cross-institution work.

REDAC helps support Hennepin Healthcare’s participation and leadership of the MN Electronic Health Record Consortium (MNEHRC), a partnership between Minnesota health systems and public health agencies to provide timely and granular data to inform the real-time actions of policymakers, health system leaders, and researchers, informing health policy and practice through comprehensive data and collaboration. Patient data that is accessed for research purposes will be used only in accordance with federal and state law and Hennepin Healthcare’s privacy practices. Patient data in the Research Data Warehouse (RDW) is stored on protected computers, and Hennepin Healthcare limits and keeps track of who sees the information.

Before researchers use RDW data, identifying information is typically removed. When identifiable data is necessary, researchers must provide justification, obtain Institutional Board Review approval, and cannot share data outside of Hennepin Healthcare.
