Emergency Department registry for patients experiencing acute agitation
Hennepin Healthcare doctors are working to improve the care for patients experiencing agitation
What we need to learn:
Doctors at Hennepin Healthcare are learning about patients in the emergency department who become agitated. Agitation means having too much movement, speech, or energy, which can sometimes lead to injury or harm. Doctors often treat it with medicine that makes patients sleepy. By collecting information, doctors hope to better understand agitation, how it is treated, and how well the treatments work.
What we are doing:
Our healthcare team is doing a study to learn more about patients who become agitated in the emergency room. We will collect information about the patient and the treatments given, and we will also review the medical record to see how the patient did. All information is kept private. This study is only for learning—it does not change patient care. Doctors and nurses will treat every patient as they normally would, and the study will not affect your care or the quality of your care.
What you should know:
When patients become agitated, doctors may need to act quickly to give medicine that helps calm them and keep everyone safe. In these moments, there isn’t time to ask for permission (consent) first. For the same reason, patients can be included in this study without being asked ahead of time. If a patient becomes agitated in the emergency department, they may be included. Please know this study only collects information and does not change the medical care in any way.
