Samuel Cramer, MD, PhD
Dr. Cramer is a neurosurgeon at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and Co-Director of the Restorative Neurotrauma Laboratory (RNL) at Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI). He is the Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) of the clinical trial for Cortical Spreading Depolarization (CSD) for patients who experience severe traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Cramer completed his undergrad at the University of Minnesota (U of M). His strong interest in neuroscience, the nervous system, and helping folks with different neurological illnesses led him to further his education at the U of M for his degrees as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). His research focuses on exploring different diagnostic and interventional modalities for traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.
TBI, Cortical Spreading Depolarization (CSD), & Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
Dr. Cramer’s research explores alternative diagnostic and interventional modalities for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The overall aim of his research efforts is to understand the maladaptive responses of the brain to injury. These efforts are part of developing new treatments, which minimize secondary brain injury and improve recovery following a TBI.
Currently, he works with multiple collaborators to address these questions using a combination of tools, including the use of in vivo optical imaging in humanely treated mouse models with TBI, non-invasive neuromodulation techniques in patients with mild TBI, and invasive neuromonitoring to monitor for cortical spreading depolarization following severe TBI.
