Sam Maiser, MD
Dr. Maiser is the Chair of Neurology and Medical Director of the ALS Center of Excellence at Hennepin Healthcare.
In addition to his work at Hennepin Healthcare, Dr. Maiser also teaches as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Neurology at the University of Minnesota (U of M), which is where he attended medical school.
He also completed a neurology residency and Clinical Neurophysiology at the U of MN and a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is board-certified in all three specialties. His main research focus is studying Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), including multi-center clinical drug trials.
Neurology, ALS, & Neuropalliative Care
Dr. Maiser’s interests lie in researching clinical Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), including multi-center clinical drug trials. These trials involve investigational drugs, hopefully slowing down ALS rate of decline, making it a more livable disease until a cure is found.
As part of this research, he participates in a natural history study that involves collecting longitudinal patient data using Electronic Medical Records (EMR), as part of the Clinical Research in ALS and Related Disorders for Therapeutic Development (CReATe) consortium. Concomitant with his ALS research, he also studies the different aspects of neuropalliative care, including advance care planning (ACP) and quality of life. He serves on an ALS advisory board that aims to better understand the complexity of quality of life in ALS and how it can be optimized for patients and their care partners.
These discoveries and research are done in collaboration with local and national researchers at the U of M, HealthPartners, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Johns Hopkins, the University of California—San Francisco, and the Northeast Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Consortium (NEALS).
