Nephrology, Transplantation, & Health Disparities
Dr. McKinney’s interests lie in researching the cause of disparities in access to kidney transplantation, evaluating patient-level barriers and facilitators to transplantation, and developing support interventions for patients and families. One of his current focuses is the joint collaborative program between HHRI, the U of M, and the Mayo Clinic; the Center for Chronic Disease Reduction and Equity Promotion Across Minnesota (C2DREAM).
C2DREAM seeks to explore the effects of interpersonal and structural racism on cardiovascular health inequities for people who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). In this program, Dr. McKinney is the Principal Investigator (PI) on a pilot project researching “Cardiovascular disease and inactive status: a single center pilot to evaluate racial disparities in access to kidney transplant after being waitlisted.” Through collaborating with underserved communities, he hopes to gather much-needed feedback and educate those most impacted by health inequities.
Outside of his clinical research, Dr. McKinney has been interviewed by Dr. Sylvia Bartley on KMOJ on his research. He has also been published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Progress in Transplantation, and Clinical Transplantation.
