Gavin Bart, MD, PhD
Director of Addiction Medicine
Dr. Bart is the Director of Addiction Medicine at Hennepin Healthcare and is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. His expertise lies in internal medicine and addiction medicine, with a particular focus on clinical pharmacology and the management of opioid use disorders.
His current research interests encompass a wide array of topics, including the integration of opioid use disorder treatment into general medical settings, medication trials for psychostimulant use disorder, population pharmacokinetics of methadone, and the genetic influences on methadone pharmacology and treatment outcomes. He is the Principal Investigator of the NorthStar Node of the NIDA National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network.
Dr. Bart’s educational background includes an MD and a PhD in experimental and clinical pharmacology from the University of Minnesota. He further honed his skills in addiction medicine at Rockefeller University in New York, where he also served as the Director of Clinical Research.
Addiction Medicine
Drug addiction is an enormous public health concern. Substance use is the number one preventable cause of death in the world. The indirect costs to society associated with drug addiction are estimated at $500 billion annually. Addiction often leads to a downward spiral in health and self-care, exacerbating concurrent chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Drug use can also be a primary cause of disease, as seen in alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis or the spread of HIV and viral hepatitis through contaminated intravenous needles.
Understanding how drug addiction develops is crucial if we are to develop improved addiction treatments. Research has shown that the environment, the effect of drugs on the brain, and genes play a role in the development of addiction, so each must be addressed for a treatment program to be successful. His research explores how health systems can better address addiction, the physiological and genetic factors that play into the development of addiction and affect treatment outcomes, and testing new medications for the treatment of specific addictions.
